These massive marine mammals can weigh up to 70,000 pounds and reach lengths of 45 feet. They are among the most endangered large whales in the world, with fewer than 350 individuals remaining in the wild. Right whales are filter feeders, consuming tiny copepods and krill by swimming through the water with their mouths open. They migrate seasonally between feeding grounds in the North Atlantic and breeding areas off the southeastern United States. Callosities—unique white patches of rough skin on their heads—are as distinctive as human fingerprints, allowing researchers to identify individual whales. These gentle giants can live 70 years or more in the ocean.
