MANGSHAN PIT VIPER
Facts About MANGSHAN PIT VIPER
The Mangshan pit viper is a venomous snake native to the Mangshan Mountains in Hunan Province, China. This species is characterized by its distinctive triangular head, heat-sensing pits along its jaw, and vibrant coloration ranging from green to yellow-brown. Known for its aggressive temperament when threatened, the Mangshan pit viper is considered one of China's most dangerous snakes. It primarily hunts small mammals and birds in its mountainous forest habitat. Due to habitat loss and illegal collection for the pet trade, this species is now protected under Chinese law and is listed as vulnerable. The venom is hemotoxic, affecting blood and tissue, making bites medically significant. These snakes are ovoviviparous, giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
